While on-page SEO is an important part of any successful online marketing strategy, the off-page optimization is far more important to get into place. Once you have your off-page SEO to a sufficient level you will begin to see your search engine ranking rise along with the amount of traffic you are receiving for your site.
In order to demonstrate the effect of off-page SEO I am going to borrow an example from a guy named Michael Cheney, one of the leading Internet marketing specialist. Go to Google and do a search for the words "click here". What you will find is that number one result for this search phrase (as of this writing) is for Adobe Acrobat Reader download page. In fact, most of the results that come up for this phrase are downloads. Why would this page be ranked so highly for this search term? The reason these pages are ranked as highly as they are is because there are literally thousand of websites that are linking to them using the words "click here." Think about all the people that public content using a PDF document, and they need to get people the tool so they can read it. So, they link to the Acrobat download page with an explanation of what they are going to need to read the document, usually ending in "to download Acrobat, click here." Google recognizes this as something relevant to these sites, so when someone searches for the words they are ranked highly. The bottom line: the more links you have with certain keywords, the higher you will rank in the search engines. You might be thinking that this is all well and good, but how do you go about getting all the links from these websites? The first step is to find another website that is ranking highly for your targeted search terms and copy what they are doing. Here is the actual steps that you need to take to get a highly ranked websites link partners to link to you: - Go to your competitors website and look for a page that contains a bunch of links to other websites. This is usually called links, resources, partners, something along those lines.
- For every link on their links page, pull up their partners website. Look through their website for an email address that you can use to contact their web administrator. This is usually some thing like webmaster@website or info@website.
- Put a link on your links page to the website you are looking at. This is actually a good way to get them to link to you, people are more likely to link back if you are linking to them first. If you can, find out what their prefered link text is. This is usually posted on their links page. If you can't find it, just use the URL of their website.
- Send the webmaster of your intended linking partner an email requesting to exchange links. Tell them your prefered link text and description. Also tell them that you have placed a link to their website on your linking page. Give them the URL of your linking page so they can confirm that you are linking to them.
- Wait for them to respond. Most of the time people will get back to you fairly quickly, but I have seen responses come back after a couple of months.
Be prepared to get a few people that simply do not want to link to you. They might consider your website too off topic or simply not like you. The key is not to take it personally and to move on to other websites that might be more open to linking to you.If you don't want to send out a thousand emails to different websites across the world, you can talk to their computers instead. There are several linking networks available that handle the link exchange process for you. You can usually find these kinds of linking partners by doing a search for your primary keyword and adding the text "Add Link" in quotes. Most of the time you will find a form that you can fill out to submit your link exchange request. Some of these forms are managed, some are not. Once you submit the form you will be given the link text and description to place on your website for your new link partner. After you post the link on your site, they will verify that the link exists and is working. Once everything has been verified they will post your link on their site. The whole process can take some time if the link exchange program is managed, but is is worth it if the websites that are linking to you have a high page rank.
