SEO; Treat your website like a good book.

Many SEO Clients and Web Publishers ask me the secrets of Search Engine Optimisation
and how to achieve top placements within the major SERPS (Search Engine Results
Pages).

There is of course (as any white hat SEO Specialist worth his/her salt will
tell you) no real secrets and no specialtactics or tricks to
sneak up on your competition and grab there vital positions. There is however
a good starting point.

Have you ever been to the library to choose a book and you just can't
decide which one to take? If the answer is yes, then ask yourself, how did you
come to your decision?

Well firstly, you will look at the cover and the title; you should of course
then have an idea whether or not the book contains information of value or interest
to you. The next natural step is to look at the reverse of the book; this will
give you a little more description and give you an even better idea of whether
or not this book is for you.

If you flip open the book, the inside cover should tell you a little about
the author, you are probably going to invest some time in reading this book
so you of course need a little information about the person who wrote it. You
most probably by know have made your decision, and you have done so by reading
the (meta-tags) of the book!

Of course once you get the book home, you will want to read the introduction,
and view the contents (sitemap).

Just imagine that a search engine spider is performing all of the above tasks
when visiting your website, so the more informative you are when creating your
meta-tags and sitemap, the more spiders will return, in my next article, I will
discuss the importance of site content, lets face it, we don't want to
read a book that we've seen in a dozen other covers - do we?
